Hippeus, this was the term used in Sparta for a force of 300 elite infantrymen. They would originally have been drawn from the aristocracy, either fighting from horseback, or riding horses to the battlefield, or simply referring to the fact that they could afford to own horses. By the classical period they would fight on foot, but the name stuck.
