Nightwish is a Finnish symphonic metal band formed in 1996 by keyboardist and primary composer Tuomas Holopainen. Known for their cinematic soundscapes and powerful vocals, the band rose to prominence with their second album, Oceanborn (1998), featuring the iconic vocalist Tarja Turunen. Tarja’s operatic voice, combined with metal elements, set a new standard in the genre.

Their breakthrough came with the release of Wishmaster (2000) and Once (2004), which included hits like “Nemo” and “Wish I Had an Angel.” After Tarja’s departure in 2005, Anette Olzon took over vocal duties, contributing to albums such as Dark Passion Play (2007), featuring the hit single “Amaranth,” and Imaginaerum (2011).

In 2013, Floor Jansen became the lead vocalist, bringing a dynamic range and powerful stage presence. The band released Endless Forms Most Beautiful (2015) and Human. :||: Nature. (2020) under her tenure, with notable tracks like “Élan” and “Noise.”

Nightwish’s lineup has seen other influential members, including founding guitarist Emppu Vuorinen and longtime bassist Marco Hietala, who provided vocals and instrumental depth until his departure in 2021. Despite changes in lineup, Nightwish continues to be a leading force in symphonic metal, known for their elaborate live shows and storytelling prowess.
