There are four platforms in Balasore railway station. Generally platforms 1,2 and 3 are used for long-distance trains like express and mail trains and platform no. 4 is used for suburban and local DEMU, MEMU trains.[clarification needed]

Balasore railway station has a computerized reservation office, cloak room, waiting room, retiring room, and refreshment room. This station is provided with Railwire free wifi by Google. One can download movies and music at high speed for 30 minutes after which speed will be reduced.[1] Balasore railway station has a double-bedded air-conditioned retiring room, 6 double bedded non-air-conditioned retiring rooms and a six-bedded dormitory, many small shops are available at all the platforms, water vending machine is also available in all platforms.
Fakir Mohan University (FM University) is named after prominent Odia writer Fakir Mohan Senapati. The seat of the Vice-Chancellor is in the new campus located at Nuapadhi, Balasore, Odisha, India.This university was established by the Government of Odisha, under Section 32 of the Odisha Universities Act, 1989 (Act 5 of 1989). It has been accredited by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) since 2000 and is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), UK.FM University is functioning in two campuses: the old campus at Januganj, besides the National Highway near Remuna Golei (around 3 km from Balasore bus stand and railway station) and the new campus at Nuapadhi (around 15 km from Balasore bus stand and railway station).
