A look back at the confrontation between Léon Blum, leader of the Popular Front, and Philippe Pétain, French head of state. The first was finally arrested on September 15, 1940, accused of being responsible for the defeat of France. From Germany, Hitler tolerated this Franco-French settling of scores as long as it served his interests. A fine orator and outstanding jurist, Léon Blum turned the situation around during the Riom trial (from February to April 1942), and directly attacked the marshal's choices.
