Dangerous Railroad Crossing That Was Closed But The Signals Are Still Maintained! Steep Crossing Being Serviced By Norfolk Southern Railroad & 3 Trains Waiting To Cross. Indiana & Ohio Railway Locomotives Work Hard To Pull Train Over Bridge Over Mill Creek In Cincinnati, Ohio. Trains With DPU Locomotives Are Included.
The dangerous level railroad crossing was closed shortly after a Metro bus got stuck on it. This is Elmwood Place, Ohio on the Norfolk Southern main line that is primarily used by NS and CSX for southbound trains. A nearby CSX main is used for northbound trains. An NS maintainer was working on the railroad signals while I was there. 3 trains were waiting to pass to enter Gest Street Yard and Queensgate Yard in Cincinnati, just a few miles south of here. We see two of them lined up and ready to go as the video starts.
The first train to pass is a Norfolk Southern mixed freight. Less than a half hour later another Norfolk Southern train approaches. It had been waiting behind the first train. It was a double stack intermodal train led by a BNSF locomotive. Just before the end of this train passed there was a third train approaching on the other track. This was a huge CSX mixed freight with a mid train DPU. This train was literally two trains in one. You might be able to count the cars on it but that will be difficult. I left after that train and tried to decide where another good place to film would be. I heard a northbound train on the scanner and decided to head over to Canal Ridge which was just a couple miles south.
I got lucky on this train. It was short line railroad Indiana & Ohio Railway with a heavy train heading northbound on the CSX main line. Check out the classic locomotives! An SD50 and a GP38-2 were running long hood forward! Listen to the locomotives as they pull the train past me! That was really awesome. They pull up on the bridge over infamous Mill Creek and stop. They had to wait for the signal. These are ancient Baltimore & Ohio Railroad signals that are still in use. If you look close you can see the lights on the left signal which is for Track 1. The Track 2 signal is on the left and track 3 doesn't use the signals at all here.
As the signal changes the train veers off to the left. The gondola cars are carrying small iron chunks that look like turtles. They load them next to the Ohio River. The covered hopper cars are empty grain cars. The tanker cars are also empty. This was a lucky catch. Btw, Amtrak also uses this track but the Cardinal only makes 3 round trips a week and I have never seen it here since it usually passes in dark. I just caught a couple of other I&O trains here the week before so I have been getting pretty lucky. Some railfans tell me that they never see the I&O trains here. Years ago I also got one of the last circus trains here. I might have got the very last one here also but I would have to check my videos.
