DENJIRO: Today, I’m going to show you an interesting instrument. Here it is.
BOY: Huh? This is an instrument?
DENJIRO: Let me show you how it makes sound. This is called a steelpan. Isn’t it strange how you get different sounds depending on where you strike it? Let’s look at the underside. It may look like it has a smooth curve, but you can see that there are flat parts. When you hit the flat part… you get a sound. But if you hit the curved part, you barely get a sound. So why is this? Let me show you by pouring salt on the steelpan and hitting it.
The salt is jumping around a lot. Sound is being produced because the flat part vibrates. As proof, if I hit the curved part… the salt doesn’t move. The curved part doesn’t vibrate much.
If we look at the instrument, we see that the area of the flat parts differ. The area is what determines the pitch. I have here two cans of different sizes. If I hit the can with a larger area, it has a low pitch. The can with a smaller area produces a higher pitch. If the area that vibrates is large, you get a low pitch. If the area is small, you get a high pitch.
Now, let’s try making a steelpan. First, hit the bottom of a can with a hammer to give it a smooth, round shape. Next, turn the can over and push the bottom to create flat parts. Let’s try playing it. A steelpan is an instrument that produces various sounds because multiple flat parts are made on a curved surface.
I hope energy will bring you all happiness. Our magic word is "Happy Energy!”
