The gold that was used to restore the large altarpieces and religious imagery had to be prepared in very fine sheets, after a slow and complex process. This work was carried out by the batifoja. In 1997, Manuel Giraldo was then the best artisan representative of this old trade in his small workshop in Madrid. A short time later it had to close due to the industrialized process in the manufacture of gold leaf.
