The electrohydraulic system in this Mercedes-Benz SL is defective.
The roof has to be closed manually.
First, switch off the ignition.
On vehicles with Keyless-Go, remove the transmitter key from the vehicle.
Place the key outside the vehicle's reception range.
Open the trunk lid.
You will need these supports to carry out the next steps.
They are for your safety.
For the following work, you will need a colleague to help you.
Place the Vario roof in the load assist position.
Prop up the roof using the supports.
Fix the supports in place with adhesive tape or cable ties.
This will prevent the supports from slipping.
Take the Allen wrench from the vehicle tool kit.
Open the screw on the hydraulic pump.
Turn the screw no more than two rotations counterclockwise.
Using an assembly wedge, remove the screw covers on the side panel covers ...
... in the trunk.
With the Allen wrench, release the locking mechanism of the tubular frame.
Do this on both sides.
Pull the tubular frame together with the trunk lid back and up in a steady motion.
The tubular frame could otherwise suffer damage.
Open the driver and passenger doors and lower the side windows.
This is necessary to avoid injury during the steps that follow.
The Vario roof can now be moved forward.
Fold the C-pillar upwards until it forms a 90 degree angle.
Be careful that the rear window does not collide with the rear shelf.
The roof mechanism could otherwise suffer damage.
Open the cover in the headliner.
Using the Allen wrench, open the latching mechanism completely.
Turn the wrench clockwise.
Move the Vario roof all the way to the front.
Insert the latch hooks into the left and right latch sockets.
You won't need the supports any more so you can remove them.
Fold down the trunk lid and secure it in the trunk lid lock.
Use Star Diagnosis to fold in the side flaps on the trunk lid.
Open the menu and select "Main groups".
Select "Control units" and then "Body".
Select "UVS Rollover bar" and then "Actuation".
Select "Actuations for emergency operation".
Select "Folding side flaps in/out."
Press "F3" to fold in the side flaps.
If the side flaps cannot be actuated using Star Diagnosis, ...
... you will have to fold them in using an emergency actuation method.
Open the trunk.
Press the tubular frame towards the front until the latch hooks on the hinge lever are in the lock position.
Turn the screws until the latches of the tubular frame are locked.
Do this on both sides.
Replace the covers on both sides.
Relock the hydraulic pump and then the roof.
Do the same as you did when unlocking the roof.
Except now turn the Allen wrench counterclockwise.
The roof is now properly closed and latched.
