For the auction of this Porsche 956 we invited Tim Ali along to take us through the history of this legendary machine...

Porsche’s involvement in motorsport can be traced back to the lightweight alloy-bodied 356 SL, which entered the 1951 24 Hours of Le Mans and won its class on the first attempt. Since then, it has won the Le Mans race outright 19 times, and remains one of the world’s largest volume manufacturers of racing cars, thanks to the enduring popularity of the 911 GT3 Cup.

Representing arguably a ‘golden era’ of motorsport, the Porsche 956 and its successor the 962 are among the most iconic of the marque’s racing cars. Collectively they won scores of races in the hands of some of the most famous names of their day – and 956-118 is no exception, having been co-driven to outright victory on two occasions by Vern Schuppan.
