1516: Spanish explorer Juan Díaz de Solís arrived at the Río de la Plata
Colonial Period:
1726: The Spanish founded Montevideo, establishing control over the region
1776: Uruguay became part of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata
Fight for Independence
1811: José Gervasio Artigas led a rebellion against Spanish rule
1821: Brazil annexed Uruguay
1825: Uruguay declared independence from Brazil
1828: Uruguay’s independence was recognized with British mediation
Nation-Building
1830: The first constitution of Uruguay was promulgated
