Fossils dating back 1.5 billion years have been discovered in Sikkim’s Mamley village. As per experts, these fossils, known as stromatolites, are remnants of ancient cyanobacteria that played a crucial role in shaping Earth's atmosphere.

Despite the site being notified as one of India’s 32 geo-heritage locations in 2014, it remained largely overlooked until recently. Sikkim’s Chief Minister, Prem Singh Golay, has now promised to develop a state-of-the-art fossil theme park. Plans include an immersive light and sound show, a geological museum, and exhibits of index fossils from around the world.

The government has already acquired over 4 hectares of land and aims to make the fossil park a hub for researchers and tourists alike. However, nearby hydropower projects and road construction pose a potential threat to the site.

With a large area, potentially up to 50 square kilometers, to explore, scientists believe more fossils from the Tethys Sea era could still be uncovered.
