This project actually came about somewhat by accident. I visited a local lumber supplier a few months back to pick up some walnut and cherry, and when I brought it all back to the workshop, I discovered that one of the cherry planks wasn't cherry at all, but rather red grandis, a wood species I had never worked with (or even heard of) before this project. In the right light, this wood shines like nothing else I've seen, and I knew I immediately needed to come up with a project for this wood. The blank, as you can see in the video, ended up being multiple wooden rings with epoxy resin filling the spacing in between. I decided to go with a darker mica pigment for this project, which I thought would compliment the lighter grain of the red grandis, and I was ultimately really happy with the chestnut pigment I chose. As with many of my projects of late, I finished the bowl with Waterlox's original medium sheen varnish, which was mostly (but not entirely) successful. Although the finish does make the wood and resin pop, the red grandis soaked up the varnish far more than I had expected, and despite now having applied 5 coats to the bowl, there are still a few areas that look slightly blotchier than I would have liked. But, I suppose these things happen when you work with a new wood! All in all, though, this was a really fun project that I am very happy with, and I am still stunned with how beautiful this wood looks.
