During this bike tour, discover the beautiful Monastery Village of Steyl in Limburg, the Netherlands.
Steyl is a village in the municipality of Venlo (Tegelen district) in the Dutch province of Limburg.
The village on the Maas is best known as a monastery village.
Since 2004, part of the old village center has been protected by the national government as a protected village of Steyl.
Steyl is located on the right bank of the Maas at an altitude of approximately 20 m NAP. A ferry connects Steyl with Baarlo.
In the past, Steyl has often had to deal with flooding due to the high level of the Maas.
The Meuse is a rain river and when there is a lot of precipitation in its southern catchment area, especially in the Ardennes, the Meuse can quickly overflow its banks.
A disastrous year was 1926, when a large part of Oud-Steyl (and Tegelen) was under water.
The last major floods were in 1993 and 1995.
On the Maas side of the Mission House, the water levels are marked on the facade.
