ARCHIVED FOOTAGE Mauna Loa Update | DECEMBER 6, 2022

In late 2022, Mauna Loa, the world's largest active volcano, experienced its first eruption since 1984. The eruption initiated at Mokuʻāweoweo, the summit caldera, at approximately 11:30 p.m. HST on Sunday, November 27, 2022. Initially focused at the summit, new fissures emerged along the Northeast Rift Zone after several hours, but soon ceased activity. By Friday, December 2, the eruption was confined to fissure 3 along the Northwest Rift Zone. Fissure 3, the sole active fissure, discharged lava at a rate of 50 to 100 cubic yards per second, streaming downhill and northward, reaching Daniel K. Inoye State Highway 200 (Saddle Road).

At 11:30 pm, we logged on, joined by Dane duPont of HVERI, to commence our coverage of the eruption. As soon as geologist Phillip Ong from HVERI was prepared, he joined the online session, and Anna and I proceeded to the eruption zone to initiate our live streaming. Throughout the entire eruption period, we consistently live-streamed from elevations ranging between 8000 and 9000 feet, ensuring the delivery of timely, responsible, and precise information about the ongoing events.

On December 13, 2022, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory confirmed the cessation of the Mauna Loa eruption, stating that "Mauna Loa is no longer erupting." They further noted, "Lava supply to the fissure 3 vent on the Northeast Rift Zone ceased on December 10, and sulfur dioxide emissions have decreased to near pre-eruption background levels."
