In 1962, a runaway fire was accidentally started in the coal seams beneath Centralia, Pennsylvania, and it’s still burning out of control. All attempts to extinguish the blaze have failed, and the effects of the underground fire forced all but a handful of residents to evacuate. As a result, the once-thriving community has vanished.

Did You Know? is UNILAD’s series exploring little-known, fascinating, unusual and important stories from history.
