There are numerous types of innovative motor designs with arguments going for and against Tesla using them. Back to Investor Day last year, Tesla revealed plans to develop a permanent magnet electric vehicle motor, distinctively avoiding the use of any rare earth elements. On the periodic table, “rare earth elements” are those outlined in red in the graphic below – Lanthanides, plus Scandium and Yttrium.

Statista. While this strategy sounds promising, rare earth elements are required for creating power dense magnets capable of withstanding the magnetic fields within an electric motor. As of now, nobody outside Tesla knows how they plan to achieve this.
