Paramount Pictures lays claim to an embarrassing wealth of popular films – the Top Gun movies, Forrest Gump, the Godfather, and of course the Star Trek and Mission Impossible franchises. Paramount also lays claim to a legendary studio logo -- the indomitable image of a majestic, snow-capped mountain peak ringed by stars. But few film fans know that a real Paramount mountain exists. Actually, a pair of real-life mountains have served as the inspiration. The story of the logo’s origin is also the story of Hollywood’s origin as a modern industry. Paramount was the first nation-wide film distributor, shattering the earlier “road show” system and blazing a trail that other studios would soon follow. For over a century and counting, the mountain logo has graced the big screen, evolving throughout the decades with advancements in technology. This video takes us back to the very start, from the logo’s birth as a crude sketch on a napkin (or so the legend goes) to its rise as a contemporary icon.
