If lightning uses a home's electrical system as a path to the ground, it can cause a power surge that can damage appliances.

Lightning can also travel through trees, water, metal fences, power lines, and plumbing, and can enter buildings. The extreme heat of a lightning strike can also cause nitrogen to bond with oxygen to create nitrogen oxides, which can fall as rain and water plants with nitrate-rich water.
