Heart disease in dogs begins in a very subtle and silent way, so it is important to be aware of possible signs.

Small breeds are strong candidates for heart disease in dogs.

Short-nosed breeds (pug, French bulldog, English bulldog, shitzu, boxer) are more likely.

It is estimated that approximately 1/3 of dogs over 10 years of age have some level of cardiovascular disease.

Heart Disease in Dogs First Signs
If a dog asks for a lap during a walk, on the path he is used to, he may suffer from heart problems.

Symptoms vary depending on which side of the heart is affected and can take years to detect.

Mainly because the symptoms can be confused with characteristics of old age (tiredness during the walks).

The heart can be compared to two pumps together.

While the right side draws blood from the body and pumps it into the lungs to form oxygen, the left side is responsible for drawing blood from the lungs and pumping it through the body for circulation.

Left-sided failure is the most common and causes blood to return and become congested in the lungs.
