UTEP played Georgetown in El Paso on December 27, 1985. Georgetown was ranked #5 in the AP and UTEP wound up being ranked #19 after the win. John Thompson was very respectful towards Don Haskins and agreed to play in El Paso with Big East officials.

Michael Wilbon (writer at the Washington Post at the time) wrote:

"Tonight in the incredible roar of the Special Events Center, Georgetown lost a nonconference game for the first time since December 1983 -- 38 games ago."

His article on the game that can be found on the internet at: https://www.washingtonpost.com/archiv...

Miners won 78-64. Crowd was intense and boisterous. Crazy times back in the Special Events Center in those days. Both teams were 9-1 after this game.

Announcers are Bob Nitzburg and Cricket Musch. I think all the Bobisms are used in this telecast (courtesy of KDBC):

"The Crowd Loves it"
"The Crowd Boos"
"Yoyoing" on the dribble
"Showtime" on the dunk
"This game is in the refrigerator"
"The big guy"
"The Cheese"

Bob tried not to be a homer doing play by play on the telecast; however, it was hard for him not to....I don't blame him...I would have rooted for the Miners as well....He calls out a missed travel by a Georgetown player on one possession.
