We borrowed the title of this current podcast from the recently deceased philosopher Miklós Gáspár Tamás, who argued in his essay The New Asceticism that "the search for material well-being today is the Trumpet of Judgment, a curse and a lie, the very Evil that causes the destruction of the human race ."
Barely a year ago, András Gelencsér, a chemical engineer and atmospheric researcher, already visited us, and then he claimed no less than that "unbridled growth and prosperity will end by 2040 at the latest, and modern civilization will enter a serious crisis", because climate change is already it is unstoppable, there are not enough sources of energy and raw materials for the transition to sustainable systems, and the supplies necessary for consumption are also running out.
András Gelencsér, in his recently published book entitled "Under the spell of daydreams - The limits of sustainable development", goes so far as to ruthlessly, but very much based on facts, deal with illusions about sustainable development that serve the short-term interests of the political and economic elite.
Economist and sociologist Zoltán Pogátsa does something similar, and in his latest volume titled Sustainable Economy or Social Collapse, he seeks answers to the questions that you. what would a truly sustainable life be like, is there still a way to get there, what kind of lifestyle, what technology is needed and who would finance all of this, who should do what and who has the opportunity to do it, also what kind of global economic collapse, wars and migration can be expected if we are not willing to give up our usual way of life.
Since the conclusion of the two scientists is the same, but their assessment of the situation is very different from each other, we thought it would be good to invite them to a discussion in the Friderikusz Podcast studio.
