Huanuco is located at 1800 m.s.n.m in the valley formed by the Huallaga River. It is in the temperate or yunga land of the eastern slope of the central Andes. The height of the regional territory Huanuqueño ranges between 250 and 6,632 meters of altitude, being the towns of lower altitude Tournavista and Yuyapichis (capitals of the district of the same name, in the province of Puerto Inca), whereas the town of Yarumayo (capital Of the district of Yarumayo, province of Huánuco), is located to 4,100 meters of altitude.
The river Marañón that runs of south to north, has its nascent ones in the snowfall of the Yerupajá in the call mountain range of Raura. It originates in recent formation lagoons, which collect the melting waters that descend from the snowy Yerupajá
