This woodturning project was a lot more challenging than it looks. I'm not detail oriented or a perfectionist, but I really wanted this one to be perfect. 3 years ago when my first son was born, I made him a nightlight that most commenters said would spontaneously combust and obliterate my entire family. My second son was born at the beginning of the year, so I was determined to make him a nightlight that isn't a deathtrap.

The shape of this wood and resin vase looks simple, but for me it's much easier to carve a pleasing curve than a straight line. Skews are great tools for that, but I've never had much luck with planing cuts on resin, and I'm far from a skew expert anyway. So getting the vase perfectly straight and symmetrical took some time. I even sanded the whole thing once, decided the shape was wrong, and basically started over.

The epoxy resin finish was an adventure too. This was my first time trying it, and after reading some helpful comments on wood turning forums, I thought I had a pretty good idea of how to do it. I had it done pretty well, but in my quest for perfection, I ruined it. So I started over again. The final result still has some imperfections, but I love it anyway.

And the LED nightlight is perfectly safe for our little beautiful dreamer.
