Limone sul Garda - The Most Beautiful Place in the World - Italy’s Prettiest Village

Limone sul Garda is located on the western shore of Lake Garda, surrounded by lush Mediterranean scenery, making it one of the most admired destinations by lovers of nature, sport, and relaxation. The mild climate throughout the year, but especially in September, provides the perfect environment for exploring the village at its best, away from the summer crowds.

Wander through the narrow, picturesque alleys of the old town, relax on the flower-lined promenade, and enjoy a lakeside aperitif or dinner. Traditional dishes, based on fresh fish and PDO extra virgin olive oil, await you in the cozy restaurants of the town. The irresistible aromas and warm hospitality of Limone sul Garda create an unforgettable experience.

For those seeking adventure, Limone offers a wide range of outdoor activities, including walks among olive groves, guided hikes, and water sports like sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing. The numerous beaches provide a perfect spot to soak up the sun and dive into the refreshing waters of Lake Garda, which has earned accolades for its purity and commitment to sustainability.

Don’t miss a guided tour of the Limonaia del Castèl, the historic lemon house, easily accessible from the town center. Take a bike ride along the famous cycle path that clings to the cliffs above the lake, offering stunning views as it stretches for three kilometers toward the Trentino border.

Limone sul Garda is not only a destination for relaxation but also offers rich history and culture. Visit the town’s museums, churches, and the Comboni Centre, and explore the area through our Smart Tours — five thematic itineraries you can easily download to your smartphone.

The name “Limone” has appeared in documents as early as the 10th century, often spelled as “Limonum” or “Limono.” While it may seem related to the fruit, “lemon,” the name actually derives from ancient Celtic roots meaning “elm tree.” Since 1904, the town has been known as Limone sul Garda.

Limone’s lemon production faced challenges in the 19th century due to diseases and competition, but the historic lemon houses remain an integral part of the town’s charm.

The Legend of Limone:
According to local legend, the god Benaco and the nymph Fillide had twin sons, Grineo and Limone. While their father had planned different paths for them — fishing and agriculture — Limone preferred the thrill of hunting on the slopes of Mount Baldo. Tragically killed by a wild boar, Limone was miraculously brought back to life by his mother’s intervention and settled in the sheltered shores of Lake Garda, cultivating the fruit that would forever bear his name.
