Inspired by Gregory C. Coleman and his Amen break, Fake It is the first original from the Heavyweights' newest member, RJ Satchithananthan. It’s funky, it’s soulful, and the horn shots are reminiscent of James Brown and Maceo Parker. They say ‘model the masters’ and the Heavyweights bring that true to form on this funk and disco track.

Featured on YouTube's “Jazz Hotlist” playlist! Thank you so much for the support!

Glad to be part of this playlist with amazing artists like Jacob Collier, Emma Rawicz-Szczerbo, Theo Croker, and many more!

John Pittman
One of Toronto’s busiest hornmen, John Pittman is in high demand as both a soloist and lead player on the jazz, commercial and salsa scenes because of his big sound, high energy and melodicism. Pittman is the winner of several awards including the Shirmer Prize and Raymond Wright Scholarship. While he considers the Heavyweights his home, Pittman can also be heard playing regularly with The Toronto Jazz Orchestra, Conjunto Lacalu, The Lula All-Stars and the Yani Borrell Orchestra. In addition to performing, Pittman is a passionate educator who places a priority on developing the improvisational and creative skills of young musicians. He has served as an adjudicator, guest artist and clinician throughout Canada and the United States and currently teaches at The Sterling Hall School.

Paul Metcalfe
Paul’s energy, grit and sophistication on the saxophone make him a sought after performer in Toronto and abroad. Along with the Heavyweights, Paul’s funky sound can be heard with the likes of Battle of Santiago, The Toronto Jazz Orchestra, Ebi, Corey Butler’s Hymns to Freedom Project, the Ken McDonald Quartet and many more.

RJ Satchithananthan
Arjuna Satchithananthan has been in demand as a trombonist in a variety of styles and venues. In the jazz world, Arjuna has performed with a variety of groups in the city, from big bands (Bruce Cassidy’s Hotfoot Orchestra, Gary Morgan’s Panamericana Big Band, the John Cheeseman Jazz Orchestra) to smaller groups (Ryan Oliver Sextet, Paul Morrison Quintet) and trad/dixieland bands (Tyler Yarema, Big Rude Jake, Red Hot Ramble). Most notably, he was selected as the youngest member to perform as part of Jazz FM 91’s 2006 celebration of the trombone entitled “Let it Slide”.

Tom Richards
Tom Richards is a musician with a kaleidoscopic range of work. A low-brass specialist, pianist, composer, conductor, and producer, Tom performs in dozens of active projects, including The Heavyweights Brass Band, The Human Rights, Riverrun, and The Woodshed Orchestra. Riverrun has become well known for pushing the boundaries of conventional performance practice through the radical use of technology and the staging of 12-hour marathon performances.

Lowell Whitty
Lowell’s infectiously energetic approach to the drums has kept him in demand on recordings and performances all over Toronto’s vibrant music scene. Since 2013, he has been heard on stage at Soulpepper Theatre Company as their resident drummer supporting over 15 different productions both locally and abroad. Being a versatile musician has landed him on recordings with many notable artists such as David Clayton-Thomas, Jane Bunnett, Jackie Richardson, percussionist Giovanni Hidalgo, Kevin Breit, Kalyna Rakel, Divine Brown and bassist / producer George Koller.

Lowell endorses Headhunter drumsticks and creations and Dream Cymbals.
