Poka Yoke and Jidoka/Difference between Jidoka and Poka Yoke
Jidoka comprises three Japanese words : Ji = Self, Do = Action, Ka = Method.

This means Self Acting Methodology : Autonomous Machine. Whenever a machine senses a problem, it stops itself immediately. The purpose : Defective parts should not be made in the first place. The concept of Jidoka was invented by Sakichi Toyoda in 1920.

Later, Dr Shigeo Shingo expanded this concept and too it to new heights. He advised more error proofing ways (Poka Yoke) which will not allow the defect to take place or will make the system detect the defect immediately. Dr Shingo invented this methodology in 1960.

So, the difference : In Jidoka, we stop the operation and sort the problem out. Poka yoke does not allow the problem to occur. Hence, no need to stop the operation.
