What is a NAS? Why do I need it and what can you actually do with it? I'll show you six cool things including a bonus here!
You don't know what a NAS is? I'll explain in outline what it is and how it can be integrated into your home network.
Using our Synology Diskstation as an example (we currently use a DS920+ as a productive system and a DS420+ as a backup system), I will show you a few great features of our NAS, which is also called Network Attached Storage in New German. The name is misleading, because with current NAS devices we are talking about mini servers which, depending on the features they are equipped with, can also be arranged in the professional sector.
From the private cloud for everyone in the family, via a mail server that also accesses external mailboxes, to self-hosted calendars for all family members plus collection dates for the local garbage calendar, it goes from managing the private photo collection including automatic server upload from mobile devices to the ultimate backup solution on another server and a cloud backup solution that complies with German data protection regulations.
As a bonus treat, I'll show you a free professional data vault and our home automation in “Docker” or the new Container Manager.
