13. SOUNDBITE (German) Peter Hajek, pollster and political scientist:
“Herbert Kickl for sure learned from the mistakes of his predecessors. Both were very fickle in their own way and Herbert Kickl is strictly intent on not leaving his strategic positions. And secondly he doesn’t want to repeat the mistakes of his predecessors. Therefore he is very meticulous when it comes to his own persona. And he is very intent on keeping his public image intact, which works well for his own target audiences – otherwise it’s rather polarizing.”

18. SOUNDBITE (German) Peter Hajek, pollster and political scientist:
“Karl Nehammer actually didn’t do that bad considering the circumstances. He took over the party when it was around 24 percent in the polls. That means if he gets let’s say 24, 25, 26 maybe under certain circumstances gets first place – then from the viewpoint of his party he did a good job. What he didn’t manage to do is to build up a chancellor-bonus to begin with. That means many people judge his work as chancellor as mediocre. We can see that in the fictitious chancellor-question where he is head-to-head with Herbert Kickl. Actually, this shouldn’t happen to a reigning chancellor.”

19. SOUNDBITE (German) Herbert Kick, FPO party chairman:
“Who can we still trust? Who was always on our side? And ask yourself: who has the guts go against the powerful to fight for your interests? This question you have to answer for yourselves. In the end the answer can only be FPO. That I am convinced of!”
