Dev Karan Singh (Aamir Khan), a Casanova and ambitious painter deep in debt, agrees to marry Anita (Deepti Bhatnagar), the daughter of Singhania (Dalip Tahil), a rich tycoon. Priya (Manisha Koirala), a music teacher for children, is engaged to Raj (Anil Kapoor), whom she has agreed to marry because he had helped her when she was in need. Priya and Dev meet on a cruise. Dev becomes fond of Priya. Dev is a fun-loving, flamboyant cassanova. He tries to get close to Priya. Initially, she doesn't get impressed by Dev, but later falls in love with him. However, due to them already being engaged to other people, they agree to work everything out and meet in 6 months on Valentine's Day to get married.

During the 6 months, Dev breaks off his engagement with Anita and starts working hard. Driven by his love, he creates and auctions beautiful paintings, and becomes very successful along with the support of his friend Natu (Neeraj Vora). On the other hand, Priya realises that leaving Raj will be wrong and sadly writes a letter to Dev, explaining everything. When Raj gets the letter instead, he supports Priya and convinces her to go to Dev. Things take a bad turn when, on her way to meet him, Priya gets hit by a car and gets her legs amputated. Dev, who waited all night for Priya, believes she has rejected him, as he does not know of her accident. Priya forbids Raj from telling Dev the truth, not wanting to become a burden on him. Now, Priya spends her time running a musical academy for small kids.

देव करण सिंह (आमिर खान), एक कैसानोवा और कर्ज में डूबे महत्वाकांक्षी चित्रकार, सिंघानिया (दलीप ताहिल), एक अमीर टाइकून की बेटी अनीता (दीप्ति भटनागर) से शादी करने के लिए सहमत हैं। प्रिया (मनीषा कोइराला), बच्चों के लिए एक संगीत शिक्षक, राज (अनिल कपूर) से जुड़ी हुई है, जिससे वह शादी करने के लिए तैयार हो गई है क्योंकि उसने जरूरत पड़ने पर उसकी मदद की थी। प्रिया और देव एक क्रूज पर मिलते हैं। देव प्रिया के प्रति आकर्षित हो जाता है। देव एक मज़ेदार, तेजतर्रार कैसानोवा है। वह प्रिया के करीब जाने की कोशिश करता है। शुरू में, वह देव से प्रभावित नहीं होती, लेकिन बाद में उसे उससे प्यार हो जाता है। हालाँकि, उनके पहले से ही अन्य लोगों से जुड़े होने के कारण, वे शादी करने के लिए वेलेंटाइन डे पर 6 महीने में सब कुछ काम करने और मिलने के लिए सहमत हैं।

6 महीने के दौरान, देव अनीता के साथ अपनी सगाई तोड़ देता है और कड़ी मेहनत करना शुरू कर देता है। अपने प्यार से प्रेरित होकर, वह सुंदर पेंटिंग बनाता और नीलाम करता है, और अपने दोस्त नाटू (नीरज वोरा) के सहयोग से बहुत सफल हो जाता है। दूसरी ओर, प्रिया को पता चलता है कि राज को छोड़ना गलत होगा और दुखी होकर देव को एक पत्र लिखती है, जिसमें सब कुछ समझाया गया है। जब राज को बदले में पत्र मिलता है, तो वह प्रिया का समर्थन करता है और उसे देव के पास जाने के लिए मना लेता है। चीजें तब खराब हो जाती हैं, जब उससे मिलने के रास्ते में, प्रिया एक कार से टकरा जाती है और उसके पैर कट जाते हैं। पूरी रात प्रिया का इंतजार करने वाले देव को लगता है कि प्रिया ने उसे ठुकरा दिया है, क्योंकि उसे उसकी दुर्घटना का पता नहीं है। प्रिया राज को देव को सच बताने से मना करती है, उस पर बोझ नहीं बनना चाहती। अब, प्रिया अपना समय छोटे बच्चों के लिए संगीत अकादमी चलाने में बिताती हैं।
