This video shows how to properly change excavator attachments with a quick coupler & lock pin. Dave uses our Komatsu PC490LC excavator to demonstrate.

When you're changing a bucket, make sure the attached bucket is placed square to the machine so that when you're lugging releases you can roll back into another bucket in the same spot. Never change attachments in the air. This is unsafe and could also damage the equipment and/or heavy equipment attachment.

Remove the lock pin. Make sure the pin is loose and everything fits between the wedge coupler and the bucket. If you have difficulty removing the lock pin, check out this helpful video from our partners at TekamoHD:    • Excavator Lock Pin Stuck? Don't Make ...

When the pin is removed, lock the keeper bolt into the pin and put it somewhere you can see it.

Back inside the cab, find the switch to operate the hydraulics of the excavator quick change. Open the safety lock and push the switch forward. The beeping noise means the wedge coupler is slowly moving out. Wait the minimum required time (~20 seconds), and then curl the bucket inward and lift it up. Visibility inspect to make sure the wedge is disengaged. Slowly curl the bucket out and lower the bucket until it drops out of the coupler. Keep the bucket low to the ground to avoid damaging it.

Now that the wedge coupler is released from the bucket lugging, you can install a new attachment. Ensure the wedge is fully disengaged and line up your quick coupler lugging. Slowly roll the quick coupler in to engage the second lugging. Ensure that the attachment is properly seated before proceeding, or you could damage the coupler and attachment.

Next, turn the wedge bar control to the lock position and the wedge will try to lock in against the bucket lugging. When everything has locked in correctly, place the safety cover back over the switch.

Place the bucket back down in the square position that you originally made the change in, turn down the throttle on the machine, and reinsert the wedge bar. Ensure the tail and top reach the correct position in the wedge coupler. The tail should go right to the botton when it is properly locked in. Re-install the keeper pin.

Follow along this simple excavator attachment changing process as Dave explains step-by-step how to change attachments on a Komatsu PC490LC, as well as helps troubleshoot some common problems you may run into.

The lock and pin quick couple system can also be used on other types of heavy equipment like skid steers, backhoes, and track loaders.
