First of all, I'd like to say that this video ain't tryin' to "steal" the artist's voice or disrespect the memory of one of my favorite singers. Quite the opposite, I believe it's some sort of tribute to him.
So, I was checking out a bunch of videos on YouTube that feature AI-generated covers, and I decided to run some tests by replacing the vocals in a few songs. Specifically, there's this one song that I've always wanted to hear because there's a really short snippet of him singing it during a concert with Screaming Trees.
Anyway, I thought the result was okay. Sometimes, the tone does come close to Layne's, but overall, Lanegan's singing style is always there, and the AI can't capture many unique characteristics of the imitated voice. You can get a faint idea of how Layne would sound, but I don't think it comes anywhere near how he would actually sing it. The proof is the video I mentioned.

RIP Layne. We miss you.
