Hello and welcome to another unboxing video at the Merriam Pianos YouTube channel! Today, we’re going to be cracking open the Roland Juno-DS88 synthesizer, which is a mid range, full size 88-note synthesizer.

This isn’t a new model, in fact it’s been on the market for a few years. That being said, as we’ve mentioned in a few of the other video’s, we’ve really been enjoying moving further into the digital and synthesizer realms and trying to cover as many essential models as possible.

If this is the first time to the Merriam Pianos channel, please subscribe, we’d really appreciate the support!

First Impressions:

This is without question a vintage looking synthesizer - some parts look like an original Nintendo system! A little cartridge pops off the front, revealing a place for AA batteries, which of course makes the instrument super portable. I can see a phrase pad and assignable faders among other things, in fact, this instrument definitely looks like a miniature RD-88.

Piano Overview:

After taking a few minutes to look the instrument over, the JUNO-88DS is definitely reminding me of several other Roland models, and yet, it still has its own distinct character and control setup. While the programmable phrase pad is something you’ll see in other Roland models, the layout is a little bit different here. The middle section has all of the various patch selections, so that’s something that's also familiar.

The action is the same as in the FA-08, which is Roland’s Ivory Feel G Keyboard. This is a solid action that feels like something between the PHA4 action and the PHA50.

Pretty impressed with the various patches after playing through several, and I definitely remember some of these from the old Fantom series models. There’s obviously a sampler and even a vocoder.

I’d say that this is an instrument that’s geared towards folks who need some basic synth functionality with easy connectivity to DAW software. The fact that it’s battery operated also indicates that this instrument is meant to be taken on the go. I don’t think this instrument is targeted towards the high end stage piano market, but it still looks like a ton of fun for us to get to know.

Summary:

â—Ź The action here is great for the price
â—Ź The weight is super light for easy portability
â—Ź Super clear and easy to use on-board controls
â—Ź Thick, well constructed samples

Thanks for joining us for this unboxing/preview video, and we’ll be back soon with a full in-depth review. Long live the piano!
