How to Clean a Catch Basin Drain: Step-by-Step Guide

A catch basin, also known as a storm drain, is a crucial part of drainage systems designed to collect and temporarily store rainwater runoff from streets, yards, and other paved surfaces. These basins help prevent flooding and manage water flow by directing excess water into the drainage system. Catch basins can be either open or closed systems and are typically installed in areas with high water flow rates.

In this video, I’ll demonstrate how to clean a catch basin drain effectively. Follow these steps to maintain your catch basin and keep your drainage system functioning properly.

#### Step-by-Step Cleaning Process:

1. **Using a Sludge Sucker**: I start by using a sludge sucker to remove standing water from the parking lot. This step ensures that the area around the catch basin is dry and safe to work on.

2. **Removing the Cover**: Once the water is cleared, I take off the cover of the catch basin. Often, this requires removing screws to gain access. This allows me to reach the inside of the basin where debris tends to accumulate.

3. **Clearing Debris**: Next, I remove dirt, leaves, and other debris from the catch basin. During this step, I also check the number of pipes connected to it to understand the drainage layout.

4. **Jetting the Line**: After cleaning the basin, I use a jetter hose to clean the drainage line. This involves using high-pressure water to flush out any remaining debris, ensuring the line is clear.

5. **Locating the Outflow**: While jetting the line, I observe where the water is flowing. In this case, I notice water flowing under mulch, indicating proximity to the outflow point of the drainage system.

This thorough cleaning process helps maintain the efficiency of the catch basin and prevents potential flooding issues.
