In today’s episode, we’re diving into a crucial part of the recruiting process: how to approach a college coach at camps, showcases, or recruiting events. This can make or break your chances, so let’s get it right!

Alright, let’s get into it.

First Impressions Matter

Think about the last time someone made a great first impression on you. Their body language was on point, eye contact strong, and their tone just right. That’s what you want to emulate when approaching a college coach.

• Body Language: Keep your eyes up, shoulders back, and walk confidently.

• Eye Contact: Stay engaged with your eyes.

• Tone: Be respectful but confident. Introduce yourself with a firm handshake and say something like, “Hey Coach, I’m [Your Name]. I’m really interested in your program.”

What to Say

Now that you’ve nailed the first impression, it’s time to talk.

• Introduction: If they don’t know you yet, introduce yourself. Example: “Hey Coach, I’m Alex Swenson. I’m really interested in your program and wanted to know if you’re in need of a right-handed pitcher in the 2027 class.”

• Engage: Ask open-ended questions. “What are you looking for in an athlete at my position?”

• Be Informed: Know something about their recent games or achievements. “Congrats on your win against UCLA!” Coaches love talking about their teams.

Follow-Up

Following up is key.

• Post-Event: “Hey Coach, I enjoyed our conversation. I’ll follow up with my video and transcript. If there’s anything else you need, please let me know.”

Timing Is Everything

There are three optimal times to approach a coach:

1. Beginning of the Event: This is the toughest time since coaches are getting ready. A simple, “Hey Coach, looking forward to competing today,” is perfect.

2. Middle of the Event: This ups your chances as coaches might come up to you.

3. Post-Event: The best time to have a meaningful conversation. Coaches usually hang around, making it easier to engage.

Pro Tips

• Be Proactive: Engage with the coaches. Overcome the nerves by practicing and gaining confidence.

• Stay Engaged: Keep the conversation going. This will help build relationships and increase your chances of getting recruited.

Remember, the goal is to be confident and respectful. Practice makes perfect, and each interaction will make you better and more confident.
