Shamian Island was an important trade hub and tourist destination for China and abroad during the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties.
In 1859, the British and French invaders in Guangzhou took a fancy to the favorable terrain of Shamian facing Baietan, which could be attacked or retreated, and forced the Qing government to dig the sand base creek in the north of Shamian, making Shamian an island and setting up a concession here.
