TASMANIAN QUICKSAND! The Ultimate 4WD bog - Roothy
What's the worst thing that could happen to your 4wd? Yep, quicksand. And despite what people tell you it can and does occur right here in Australia. I've been stuck in quicksand around Coffin Bay in South Australia, along the Eyre Peninsula and ofcourse, the west coast of Tasmania.
Strange isn't it? The worst possible bog in the most beautiful and remote stretch of caost in the world. Usually caused by pools of water stranded at high tide slowly moving under the surface back to the sea at low tide, it doesn't always follow any rules. People who are used to it often say the first couple of vehicles in a convoy will get through but the motion of their wheels will soften up the drop for the third. That's exactly what happened on this trip and all I saw was some shimmying around the wheels, a bit of squirming from the truck in front of me and then - ooomph, down she went. I hopped out and promptly sank to above the knees.
