The term ‘Miradouro ‘, meaning lookout point in Portuguese, carries a rich historical significance in the Azores. Many of the "miradouros" you’ll encounter on the islands were once crucial to the economy, serving as vantage points for whale spotters during the era of whale hunting from the end of 19th century through the FIRST HALF of the 20th CENTURY.

Now that whale hunting has been replaced by whale watching, the Azores have found a sustainable way to preserve their unique heritage.

Lookout points like Miradouro da Vigia da Balhena (WHALE LOOKOUT), once used for hunting, now serve as platforms for tourists to enjoy SUCH spectacular views LIKE THIS ONE but also for Whale spotters who now inform whale watching companies where whales are located for the tourists to enjoy their sight.

Miraduro de Cintrao is one of those spots. It’s located in the north coast of Sao Miguel, near the pretty town of Ribeira Grande. I will leave you the link to the map here so that you can get there EASILY. https://maps.app.goo.gl/9XmuYUA8rvbeA...

Miraduro de Cintrao is reachable by walking, biking, or car, as local transportation is not very reliable in the Azores, especially to the most interesting points such as this one.

If you keep walking or driving along the main road, you will get to the lighthouse. This structure was inaugurated in 1975 and it is composed of a 14 mt high lighthouse, the accommodations for its keeper. And you can visit it every Wednesday afternoon from 2 to 5 pm.

If you keep driving ALONG THE COAST YOU WILL GET TO THE MIradouro do Paleiro WITH SPECTACULAR VIEWS OF THE VULCANIC BEACH
As you can see in the video, there is a very well-marked trail that you can walk for 4 km, which will take you to the most amazing views of the area.
On the sign you will find all the information about the trail.

On the opposite side you will find Praia Do areal de Santa Barbara, which is the most popular beach for surfing in the Azores. whether you surf or not, you must check it out and enjoy the beautiful extensive beach. There is a surf school, if you want to give it a try, and surfboard rentals. And a nice bar and restaurant Calle Tuka Tula if you want get a drink or a meal while enjoying the spectacular views.
