Beacon Hill Battery was built to defend the port of Harwich in Essex. The first fortification built on the site was a blockhouse, constructed in 1534 during the reign of Henry VIII. Having been in and out of use on many occasions during the centuries and playing a large part during ww1 and ww2 in defending the country in the event that we may have been invaded it was evetually abandoned in 1956 and left for nature and vandalism to take over.
