Last weekend I ticked off a peak I've been eyeing for a long time.

Mount Barney is the crowning jewel of Queensland's scenic rim. Big, steep and rugged, it looms over the lesser peaks in the area and boasts expansive 360° views from the Summit.

Actually there are 2 summits - Barney East and West. I climbed the more popular East Peak, which at 1359m is slightly higher than West Peak (1354m).

Parking at the Yellowpinch Carpark, I hiked in and ascended via the South East Ridge - the second and more difficult of the official summit routes. After topping out on East Peak, I descended to the Old Hut camp site where I spent a blustery night in the tent. The next day I continued through the Rum Jungle campsite and descended via the South Ridge (aka Peasants Ridge) route, which is generally known as the 'standard' route up the mountain.

Mount Barney National Park is about 2hrs drive south of Brisbane and sits adjacent to the QLD / NSW border.
