Patali Shreekhetra - Madhaba Gumpha in Subarnapur District of Odisha

Patali Shreekhetra is believed to be the hideout place of Jagannath Bhagwan for app 144 years. According to the temple chronicles of Puri Jagannath Mandir, named Madala Panji, to save the idol of Jagannath Bhagwan from the attack of a Yavana named Raktabahu, the priests had berried it some where in Sonpur. When the Somavamsi King Jajati Kesari (1st) of Tri-Kalinga (present day Western Odisha) occupied Utkal (present day Coastal Odisha), found the main temple without deity. He enquired and managed to discover the lord here in a cave in Trikuta hills in Subarnapur district. He reinstalled the lord by erecting a new temple in Puri. So, this hideout abode of Lord Jagannath is known as Patali Shreekhetra. Present Jagannath temple at Puri is a attributed to Ganga King Choda Ganga Deva.

Patali Shree Khetra is app. 70 Km from Sambalpur, from where we began our journey.
