Cnicht is a mountain in Snowdonia which forms part of the Moelwynion mountain range and this hike has been on my 'to do' list since moving to north Wales. We set off early and wound our way up to the peak of Cnicht from a south(ish) direction. It was a steady climb and the mountain’s snowy summit kept revealing itself as the wind and cloud whistled and gusted by. After some fun scrambling we reached the top and proceeded on towards the northern end to find a trail down to the Snowdonia slate trail to eventually walk back parallel to the mountain, along the valley side. Thick fog, cloud and snow cover made navigation difficult and we lost the path at various points. Having a map (on a phone) was a real saviour and saved us trudging aimlessly, hoping to come across some sense of civilisation. We eventually stumbled out into an abandoned Slate works/quarry, eerily appearing out of the fog. It was really interesting and we spent some time exploring before getting back on the trail to head down the cwm and along the valley back to the car and home.

FYI: Trail running shoes were a terrible choice!
