For the Utti Jaeger Regiment’s Helicopter Battalion of the Finnish Defence Forces, flying low-level is the name of the game.

Its seven MD 500s and 20 NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopters are essential to Finland’s ability to defend itself. But Russia’s war in Ukraine has demonstrated that anything operating higher than a few tens of feet within the ‘A2/AD’ (Anti-Access and Area Denial) bubble is likely to be destroyed very quickly.

The overall task of the Helicopter Battalion is to provide Special Operations Forces (SOF) air power using helicopters — since this is the only unit of the Finnish Defence Forces that has helicopters.

In common with other SOF units, the operators of the Utti Jaeger Regiment have a diverse range of duties and operational domains, from counter terrorism to special reconnaissance and direct action.
