Montecatini Alto is a medieval village above Montecatini Terme, a famous Spa town in Tuscany, Italy. This picturesque village was once fortified by walls, with eight access gates destroyed in 1554 by the Florentine troops of the Grand Duke Cosimo di Medici during their attempt to conquer the area. Despite its turbulent past, Montecatini's historic centre has a unique and enchanting charm, with narrow alleys and picturesque corners waiting to be discovered.
This village can be reached using the historic funicular railway, which opened in 1898 and consists of two carriages, called "Gigio" and "Gigia". The journey covers just over a kilometre with a 20% average incline and takes about 10 minutes. It can also be reached from Montecatini Terme by car or along an old path winding up the hill.
