Happy birthday, Dear Franz!

Thanks to a friend for scanning this score (and the blurry sections on the side are due to the fact he couldn’t keep the book still during scanning).

Liszt’s Tarantelle di Bravura is based on the Tarantelle from Auber’s La Muette di Portici, first written in 1846 was dedicated to Madame Marie Pleyel (who was another legendary pianist of his time). This piece is a theme and variations, split into disjunct parts with the theme of the Tarantelle following an introduction which is followed by one variation. Then the second part of the theme is introduced in G major, and then a variation on the G major theme. The first theme comes back with another 2 variations, and then the third theme in E major comes in. The third theme also comes with a variation marked as optional. Then comes again the first theme then followed with 2 variations and a monstrous cadenza (note the brutal chromatic thirds!). There is then an entrance with one more variation to a march, coming with it’s own set of variations which develops into the coda. This piece has three versions, first as S.386i in 1846, then S.386ii which has a few cut off sections not presented here and then the last version for Sophie Menter in 1869 as S.386iii which is also presented here. Sophie Menter was one of Liszt’s favorite and most gifted students, of which he wrote alterations and additional passages for a few of his personal favorites, of which are: this piece, the Marche Hongroise S.425/2, the Don Giovanni fantasy S.418 and the Soirées de Vienne No. 6 S.427/6.

This performance has a few differences from the score, which I think are probably misreadings, however Wong’s performance is the only one we have of the third version, so this is all we have.

Timestamps:
1846 first version: 0:05
1876 third version: 10:11

sorry if there’s any editing mistakes I was feeling unwell when I was making this lol
