The Bolivian Salt Flats are on many travelers bucketlists, and they were on ours as well! To make sure we really soaked in the area, we took a three day tour exploring the Uyuni Salt Flats (Uyuni is the town nearest the salt flats) and the region surrounding it which include the Siloli Desert and a National Reserve. We did the tour in reverse of most routes so we could save the best for last and visit the classic site of the Uyuni Salt Flats on the last day of our tour (so stay tuned in the video to see the world's largest mirror at the end!).

We had an amazing time on this trip, but wouldn't actually recommend the tour company we booked with. Instead, you can look at the same route on GetYourGuide (which uses a different company) that might be better to book with :) https://getyourguide.tp.st/rSN7cmDN

In the days leading up to visiting Salar de Uyuni, we travel more than 1000kms in a Toyota Landcruiser (from 1990...yep!) and see desolate land that held many surprises. We come across formations made by lava from volcanic eruptions, see llamas roaming the desert, visit a thermal hot spring in the middle of the night, visit geysers as they blow steam, and visit many colourful lakes filled with flamingoes including Laguna Colorada, Laguna Honda, and Laguna Chiarcota. The first two days of the tour were packed, and that was before the cherry on top - the classic visit to the Salt Flats.

The third day of our tour was the big day! We started off with a visit to the train cemetery where we got some cool drone shots but if we’re honest, we thought it was a bit overrated. After a delicious lunch we finally arrive at the Salar de Uyuni (Uyuni Salt Flats) and spent hours taking hilarious perspective photos with the help of our guide. Just before the sun began setting we hop in the 4X4 one more time to go to a spot where about 1 inch of water is sitting atop the salt, giving the mirror effect we have been dreaming of seeing. The sunset that followed was possibly the best of our lives. The colors were incredible, and seeing them reflected in the world's largest mirror is something that will stay with us always.
