As we begin to travel northwards along California's coastline, it would seem almost tragic to skip over a city which has played an instrumental part in the history of the state. Before the meteoric rise of the cities we consider as anchors of the state, the cultural/political landscape of California was under drastically different circumstances. The settlement of Monterey sprung up to serve as one of Spain's northernmost significant communities in the territory they called Alta California, along what today is considered the Central Coast. It grew to become a mighty capital city, where shipped imports were processed and regional governmental administration operated. Even after the acquisition of western lands to the United States, the fishing and canning industry carried Monterey through many more decades of active economic participation. Made famous for a long list of firsts in its historic record, an assortment of aged buildings reminiscent of the bygone past, and a spectacular set of views along its jagged and picturesque coastline, this city promotes California's classic west-coast excellence while sparing you a headache from typical touristic overstimulation and crowds. Ready to find yourself on the path of Californian history?
