I realized that Abbey was using memories as descriptive language when she was in Jr. High at her autism school. I tried to help her associate 'feeling' words with the memories she had. If she could add those kinds of words ( sad, scared, angry), she could be understood. I drew out the memories and added the feeling words in what I called "Abbey's visual dictionary". I have currently researched Gestalt Language Processing - to discover how many on the spectrum that struggle with language like Abbey might have a similar language learning process - episodic memory takes over language and then participating in conversation becomes extremely difficult and isolating. I feel like targeting this part of Abbey's autism could help her get to her next step in life. We will be posting here to show the strategy and process!. Thanks to Ryann @support_the_spectrum
