Athena the jill ferret persistently tracks a rabbit through its burrow until it bolts.

Purse nets are used to cover each hole. The ferret is then entered to flush/herd the rabbit out. Once caught in the net the ferreter ends the hunt quickly and humanly.

It is believed ferrets were originally domesticated for this purpose. Like the cat It's believed ferrets were initially encouraged to live on farms to help control rats and rabbits to protect crops. It still maintains its title as the most natural method of controlling rabbit populations while providing food for the table.

These rabbits are collected for food, for my ferrets and people. This is a free range meat, that has lived a free life. These rabbits will be controlled even without me. By taking them myself, the meat is used. Ferreting is an environmentally friendly method of harvesting free range meat.
