Why should you make soap with palm kernel oil: palm kernel oil is used in most bar soap recipes as is easily found and can be sourced locally and very cheap. Making oalm kernel oil an important commodity in bar soap making business.

HOW TO CALCULATE FOR CAUSTIC SODA IN BAR SOAP.
So many times beginners find it very difficult to calculate for caustic soda or lye used in making bar soap. This problem of how to calculate caustic soda can be averted if one knows the rudiments behind it.
Each oil has a specific (SAP ) Saponification value asigned to it . And this can be found on line. You can browse for Saponification oil charts online to see all.
So since am using palm kernel oil. I will check on the chart to see the saponification value for palm kernel oil and is 0.178gram. This value is in turn multiplied by the weight of oil to be used.

Example: 250grams of oil x 0.178 = 44.5 grams.
Is that simple.

Formula (oil weight x SAP value) = Weight for caustic soda.

When dealing with bar soap of common hard oils. One can work with 1:3 so for every 1 part of caustic soda one needs three part of NaOH (caustic soda) .

44.5 x 3 133.5g of water
This is more or less 140mls of water when approximated to the nearest tens.

After making your calculation measure it out and follow the video for steps.


For cold process bar soap plz make sure the temperature of caustic soda returns to normal before soaping.

So magically you can see how one can make bar soap with only two components; lye solution and oil.

Combine together and pour into mould.
After 6 hours remove from mould.
