In September 2009, UNESCO officially approved it to be included in the "Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity", and the Dragon Boat Festival became the first festival in China to be included in the world's intangible cultural heritage.
端午节是汉字文化圈的传统节日，定在每年农历五月初五，是夏季送离五瘟神，驱除瘟疫的节日。战国时期的楚国爱国诗人屈原于这一日投江自尽，后以纪念屈原，有人称其为诗人节（有些地方是纪念吴国忠臣伍子胥的忌日），是华人四大节日之一，与新春、中秋等节日同属汉字文化圈的中国大陆、香港、澳门、台湾、新加坡、马来西亚、日本列岛、琉球群岛、朝鲜半岛、越南的重要传统节日。2009年9月，联合国教科文组织正式批准将其列入《人类非物质文化遗产代表作名录》，端午节成为中国首个入选世界非物质文化遗产的节日。
